Generation Z (~ born between 1995-2012) entered the workplace two years ago, making it the most recent generational cohort. This session will consider the characteristics among generational cohorts, including areas of differences and friction, and the implications for the workplace. To better understand Gen. Z, various factors that attribute to affect this group, such as childhood, parental practices, attitudes, and beliefs that shape their worldview. Social media, smartphones, and heavy technology usage have consumed thousands of hours of this group’s time, causing many researchers to be concerned about potential technological addiction. This iPhone-connected lifestyle will translate to the workplace and has implications for both the Gen. Z employee and prospective employers, leaders and HR practitioners. Finally, recommendations for recruitment tactics, employee retention, and leadership will be suggested, based on our original survey data.

About Santor Nishizaki

Dr. Santor Nishizaki is a Gallup-Certified StrengthsFinder Coach and the Founder and CEO of the Mulholland Consulting Group, LLC., whose mission is to help organizations increase generational awareness and create a happier workplace. His company specializes in coaching, training, and consulting organizations from the private and public sectors that are interested in growing their Millennial and Generation Z employment engagement, as well as strategic planning, team-building, interpersonal skills, and leadership development using a Gallup StrengthsFinder approach.

Santor has published domestic and international articles about Millennials in the workplace, mentoring, and leadership and is currently writing a book (to be released this year) with James DellaNeve about working with Generation Z. He is also writing a “how-to” guide for first-time and emerging leaders by interviewing over 100 Millennial leaders from multiple industries, including Fortune 500 companies, winners of Forbes 30 Under 30, Inc 30 Under 30, Entrepreneur’s 27 Under 27, a CNN Hero, government, nonprofit, and educational organizations.

In addition to Santor’s coaching and training experience, he is a Ph.D. and MBA professor who teaches subjects such as leadership, diversity in the workplace, marketing, management, global supply chain, and entrepreneurship. Lastly, Santor has corporate experience beyond academia, more recently working as a project manager in Shanghai, China for a Fortune 100 Company and as a supply chain manager for a NASA Center.
