Description
Emotional intelligence is widely recognized as essential to effective leadership, but what does it look like when it is integrated into the everyday work of a complex, fast-moving organization, and how can coaches help clients build it in a durable, repeatable way?
Drawing from her experience as a finance and strategy leader at Amazon, a workshop facilitator, and an ICF-PCC coach through her practice, Compounding Leadership, Shruti Rustagi will offer a practitioner’s view of bringing emotional intelligence into the workplace. The session is anchored in her four-pillar framework of curiosity, openness, adaptive resilience, and empathy that Shruti developed through her work with middle managers and functional leaders navigating organizational change. She will also introduce the idea of the “mindset pivot,” drawn from her book Fearless Productivity: the deliberate, practiced shift from a reactive default pattern to a more intentional one, where insight often becomes behavior change.
Shruti will share how she incorporates emotional intelligence into her leadership at Amazon, the leadership workshops she facilitates, and her coaching practice with managers and functional leaders, including those often asked to move work forward through influence rather than formal authority. Through practical examples, she will examine how leaders can become more aware of their emotional patterns, manage themselves under pressure, communicate more intentionally, navigate challenging relationships, and respond effectively in ambiguous environments.
The session will also invite coaches to consider what it takes to bring coaching-informed frameworks into organizations from the outside, while staying connected to a client’s culture and business realities. How can a framework like the four pillars be used as a coaching lens rather than just a leadership model? And how can emotional intelligence become a lived practice rather than simply another competency model?
Participants will leave with a concrete framework and coaching questions they can use in their own practice, leadership-development programs, and organizational partnerships.
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
1. Apply the four-pillar framework (curiosity, openness, adaptive resilience, empathy) to help clients move from strong execution to broader organizational influence.
2. Describe ways emotional intelligence can be integrated into conversations, leadership workshops, and day-to-day management practices.
3. Use each pillar as a coaching lens, with specific questions, to strengthen self-awareness, emotional regulation, empathy, communication, and relationship management.
4. Connect individual development to team effectiveness and organizational impact, particularly for clients leading through change or disruption.
