Description
In team coaching, client requests often arrive as problem statements — “fix the conflict,” “get everyone aligned,” or “help them communicate better.” What coaches agree to do in response matters far more than the request itself.
This interactive SIG session focuses on how team coaches translate what clients say into clear, coachable agreements that keep the team — not just the leader — at the center of the work. Participants will practice discerning who the real client is, clarifying what must be contracted before acting, and shaping agreements that preserve coaching rather than drift into facilitation or consulting.
Using realistic cases and peer discussion, participants will work in breakouts to interpret common sponsor statements, identify what needs to be re-contracted, and articulate a practical “next contracting move.”
This session is designed for coaches who work with teams — or aspire to — and want to sharpen their contracting judgment in complex, real-world situations. The Group & Team Coaching SIG is a space for coaches who are working with, or considering moving into, group and team coaching and want to sharpen their understanding and practice through real-world conversation and shared learning.
Key Takeaways:
- Translate surface-level client requests into clear team coaching agreements.
- Identify when the team (not the leader) should be treated as the client.
- Recognize signals that require re-contracting before action.
- Distinguish when to stay in coaching versus move along the coaching–facilitation continuum.
- Formulate one practical “next contracting move” they can apply in their own practice.
