Description

We go a bit deeper in this month’s SIG, discussing the idea of permission in writing to shift the narrative to a different model or genre. We tend to box ourselves in creatively because we think we should project a message, story or our experiences in a certain way as writers that conforms to our profession. In this act, creativity can be squashed or authentically muted.

Imagine a space and time where you could write about what you care about versus what you think you should be doing. It can take courage to write above the norm, but if your storytelling is not going to move you, there will be little to no effect on others.

All great books start in a reclamation process. Joined by Professional Certified Co-Active Coach and Award-Winning Author Abigail Morgan Prout, the intent of this session is to guide you through a conscious and informative conversation to form a new pattern and rhythm of writing. Without discounting structure or the importance of having outlines, book coaches, editors, we show that you can mold, craft and then shift. Taking ownership of your authorship (a class Kim taught with Abigail as a participant) is one of the keys to discovering your unique path to writing that feels good and true for you.

Abigail will discuss her process of coming to her decision to write a book of poetry, and we will have paired sharing of the process for each participant through informed exercises.

Shifts in your writing perspective to expect include:

  • Tools to process and channel your authentic creativity
  • Ownership of the voice within craves a new narrative
  • Listening and observing what resonates with your audience.

About Abigail Prout

Professional Certified Co-Active Coach Abigail Morgan Prout is a leader and a trainer for other coaches through the Co-Active Training Institute. Initially thinking she needed to write a coaching book, a long pause and connection with the nature around her on Lopez Island (where she calls her home) allowed her poetry to come to the surface. Walk Deep, her first book, won the 2021 Homebound Publications Poetry Prize, a 2023 Nautilus Book Award, and is currently nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Walk Deep was published by Wayfarer Books/ Homebound Publications in October 2022. This book is a love letter to Lopez Island, specifically to a forest path on Lopez Hill that functions as her muse. Abigail is passionate about the role that nature and poetry plays in personal transformation and leadership. Every morning you can find her singing to the island forest with her silky black lab, Bella.
